My work is about creating an encounter or an experience, manipulating the emotions of the viewer on the subject of mortality and existence through repulsion, fear or curiosity. There is heavy influence on my work and ideas from Freud’s 'The Uncanny' and further psychology born from Freud's groundwork, and borrowing ideas of monsters and elements of horror. In some ways my work mockingly pays homage to the statues and monuments using materials that won’t last and their partial resemblance to the broken statues in the British museum. It highlights the impermanence and fragility of our existence. In recent work I have been considering the idea of the 'Clever Object' and re-thinking what truly makes a monster; how what makes us afraid, unsettled has changed and the potential of the ancient being. The work mixes the mundane [object] with 'otherworldyness' strangeness.
